The entire state will have their eyes on Hattiesburg Friday night as two top ten teams faceoff against each other. #2 Hattiesburg (3-0) and #7 Oak Grove (3-0) have both been virtually unstoppable so far this season.
“It’s a huge game for both [teams],” Tiger head coach Tony Vance said. “Both of our communities take pride in our football programs.”
Both the Warriors and the Tigers are offensive juggernauts and will go as far as their quarterbacks will take them. While the quarterbacks are both explosive playmakers, they make plays in their own respective fashion.
Hattiesburg senior quarterback Jarod Snoop Conner has over 783 total yards and 9 total touchdowns through three games this season. 431 of those yards and all but one of those touchdowns have come on the ground. Conner’s ability to get out of the pocket and pick up yardage on his feet make containing him and the Tiger offense a difficult task.
Oak Grove senior quarterback John Rhys Plumlee, a Georgia commit, is a much more traditional quarterback. He is a throw first player and is extremely accurate. Plumlee has already racked up 641 yards and nine touchdowns without throwing a single interception so far this season. He’s done all that without the Warrior’s top receiver Brandon Hayes who is out with a knee injury.
“I don’t know if you can completely shut [Plumlee] down,” Vance said. “He’s capable of making big plays, we’ll have our hands full no doubt.”
While the Hattiesburg defense will have their hands full trying to stop the Warriors, the Tigers are coming off a game against Moss Point where they forced four turnovers, two of which they scored defensive touchdowns.
“Our secondary is going to have to step up to the plate and play football,” Vance said. “It’s going to boil down at some point in the game to someone making a play.”
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm from Ray Stadium in Oak Grove. Can’t make the game? Follow here for live updates.
